With great pleasure, PHOTOCONSORTIUM welcomes on board a new member: Dr. Marinos Ioannides in representation of the Digital Heritage Research Lab of the Cyprus University of Technology.

The Digital Heritage Research Lab (DHRLab) was established in 2013 and is devoted to research on the digitisation, archiving, and promotion of cultural heritage, tangible and intangible remains of our cultural past. The research scientists and doctoral students employed at the lab engage in collaborate research with national and international institutions to explore the latest technological advances in the field, their efficacy and usefulness in bring cultural heritage information to end-users, obstacles and prospects for further development. At a European level the lab collaborates with a network of over 150 partners from the academic, research and industrial sectors working towards the development of new tools and applications. DHRLab is a prototype of cooperation and has rapidly achieved world-spectrum collaboration research programs. The lab has created a unique and wide research network and agenda with great potential for future activities. The input of the lab is significant, since it promotes and supports an advanced scientific basis.

Already before officially joining PHOTOCONSORTIUM, Marinos and his team collaborated to the exhibition ALL OUR YESTERDAYS, providing interesting vintage photographs from the Archive of the Municipality of Limassol. One of these is the beautiful image above of the ship Himalaya. Launched in 1853, the iron troop ship Himalaya conducted missions in, among others, Gibraltar, Queenstown and Portsmouth. It was at Cape Coast Castle during the Ashanti War, assumed torpedo service in 1886 and continued to serve as a troop ship until 1890. It was then converted to a coal hulk, in 1920 sold to a civilian contractor and sunk in June 1940 during an air attack on Portland Harbour. The image shows the ship in 1890, visiting Limassol (Cyprus).
