The NALIS (National Academic Library and Information System) Foundation was established in 2009 by three major Bulgarian academic libraries in Bulgaria with the support of the America for Bulgaria Foundation. Its sole purpose then, was to create a unified online catalogue of the Bulgarian research and university libraries. Two years later – and after having started from scratch – NALIS offers more than 1 million bibliographic records in a freely accessible online catalogue and has embarked on major digitization and retro-conversion activities. NALIS is involved in other aspects of the modern librarypractice as well, such as popularization of international standards and best practices, and terminological clarifications.
